Why Writing Is the Most Important Skill for Product Managers
1. Why writing is important for PMs
In product management, writing is treated not as an auxiliary tool but as the center of thinking
- If you first turn vision organization, problem structuring, and priority judgment into writing, gaps in your thinking are easier to see
- Rather than agreements passed over quickly in speech, when left in documents the team’s understanding is more steadily aligned
- Writing is advantageous for connecting requirements, direction, and expected effects into one flow
2. How writing makes product judgment clearer
Good writing does not end with explaining ideas, but reveals judgment criteria
- If you write in sentences what you are trying to solve, why now, and what you will discard, priorities become clearer
- If there is a document at the draft stage, feedback shifts from general impressions to issue-focused discussion
- The habit of organizing thoughts in a document before execution reduces the cost of discussion
3. Practicality in team collaboration
Documents go beyond a PM’s individual capability and become a tool that determines collaboration speed
- If there is writing shared before and after meetings, it is easier to reduce interpretation gaps between design, development, and business perspectives
- If decision items and unresolved questions are separated, follow-up work is less shaken
- If writing comes before speech, responsibility and context remain together, making re-discussion easier
4. Points worth looking at together while reading
You can connect individual writing habits with the way product operations are run
- What kind of documents actually help decision-making
- The different roles of vision documents, problem definitions, and decision memos
- The way of distinguishing whether the purpose of writing is explanation or alignment
- Even with the same content, the structure changes depending on the purpose of the document
