Why AI-Generated Apps All Look the Same
1. AI-generated UI converging on the average
Apps made with AI repeat similar visual grammar even while handling different services.
- Familiar color and layout combinations appear as if they were the default
- A 135-degree gradient in purple and blue tones, a centered hero, and two buttons of equal weight are often grouped together
- Pill-shaped tags, 3-column card grids, and rounded corners of around 12–16px repeat across the screen
- The way content is organized into cards is used excessively
- Information of different kinds, such as features, reviews, and pricing, is handled with similar cards, weakening the screen’s rhythm and individuality
- Structured consistency takes precedence over the importance of each element, so what stands out first is not what the product is but what template it is
2. Why it is polished but lacks individuality
AI is strong at choosing combinations that many people can accept without issue, rather than inventing a new visual language.
- It prioritizes statistically safe designs
- It combines learned success patterns to produce results that are close to the average with a low chance of failure
- The basic level of polish is stable, but unfamiliar proportions, bold whitespace, and intentional imbalance easily disappear
- There is a gap between mechanical hierarchy and intentional attention hierarchy
- It handles size, spacing, and alignment skillfully, but finds it hard to decide on its own what should be seen first
- By emphasizing all sections evenly, the difference between the main subject and the background blurs, and the product’s own perspective weakens
3. The designer’s role is to make the reasons for choices
Differentiation in the AI era begins not with the ability to make more mockups, but with the ability to judge what to keep and what to discard.
- First notice recurring conventions and intentionally move away from them
- Rather than simply refining familiar gradients and card combinations, look again at whether they are structures needed for the product context
- Choose one element to emphasize and reduce the presence of the others to create a clear hierarchy on the screen
- Turn taste into explainable criteria for judgment
- Explain in sentences not only which option is better, but also what was emphasized and what was sacrificed
- This language aligns the team’s choices and adds the product’s own perspective to the safe results made by AI
