AI Operating Principles
1. Why comes before how
AI quickly suggests ways to execute, but what to make and why that judgment is made remain the designer’s responsibility.
- Rather than following the tool’s answer, establish a perspective you can explain and defend yourself
- The logic and criteria for choosing a result, rather than the result itself, create the difference in design
- Do not cover up ambiguity with immediate answers; stay in the unknown until you fully understand the problem
- The context discovered in the exploration process leads to better questions and direction
2. Speed creates room to be more careful
The value of time saved with AI is not more output, but the room to slow down at important moments.
- Handle repetitive tasks and draft creation quickly to return time to the points where judgment is needed
- You can carefully review the impact on users, quality standards, and scope of responsibility
- Rather than aiming for fast productivity, choose when to stop and think again
- A way of working that combines the ability to increase speed with the judgment to control it
3. Share structure with AI, and refine human qualities more precisely
Flow and logic can be supported by AI, but the temperature of the experience and the emotional connection are completed through human care.
- Share work with AI for information architecture, pattern organization, and repetitive composition
- The nuances of expression, consideration, and the trust users will feel should be refined directly by the designer
- Adding warmth and context to an efficient result is the role of the human designer
4. Reduce complexity to preserve initiative
As automation increases, you need to keep checking whether new tools and workflows are truly necessary.
- Do not accept unnecessary steps and management tasks created by AI as a new standard
- Look not only at implementation costs, but also at the ownership costs of maintenance, review, and revision
- It is better to boldly reduce complexity that clouds judgment or increases the team’s work
- Use not how much AI is used, but how clearly humans chose by clear criteria, as the basis for quality
