The Experience Debt
1. The moment rapid launches turn into debt
Experience debt is the state in which UX defects and complexity deferred in the process of prioritizing speed accumulate across the product.
- The more short-term fixes are repeated, the more friction remains out of sight.
- Broken flows, unclear states, and missing exception handling grow as they overlap with later features.
- Measuring success by the number of deployed features makes it easy to fall into the build trap.
- As output takes precedence over user value and business results, features increase but the experience becomes heavier.
2. Signs that experience debt is surfacing
The problem appears first in connected systems and collaboration structures, rather than in a single bad screen.
- As features are added, exception rules and screens become more complex.
- The connectivity and consistency between services and channels weaken.
- Multiple teams redesign the same UX/UI issues on their own.
- Even small changes come to require coordination across multiple systems and teams.
- Even when the UI is refreshed, the underlying structure and flow remain the same.
3. Four shifts for resolution
A shift is needed, from a way of making screens faster to a way of defining problems, experiences, and systems first.
- Before launch, validate the problem to solve before the requested feature.
- Look at whether it is truly the actual problem through hypotheses and user behavior.
- Before setting the backlog, align on the product purpose, customer value, and experience principles.
- The North Star becomes the basis for feature prioritization.
- Instead of individual screens, design the overall journey and channel connections as UX architecture.
- Reduce the disconnects that arise when the front and back stages are optimized separately.
- Establish broader experience governance instead of component management.
- Manage behavioral outcomes such as NPS and conversion rate together with consistency across channels.
4. From feature review to experience review
Experience debt is reduced not by a one-time redesign, but by changing the criteria used in everyday decisions.
- In reviews, look at the burden newly placed on users along with feature completeness.
- Check whether additional learning is required and whether the existing flow becomes longer.
- Connect not only deployment volume but also behavioral change to the same metrics.
- See whether user success and business results have improved together.
- Manage accumulated experience issues with a common language and backlog.
