What Matters When Anyone Can Make Things
1. Overview and Background
- Shift in context: As the barriers to coding and implementation fall, we’ve entered an era where anyone can turn an idea into a service almost instantly.
- Core concern: At this point, 'speed' is just a basic assumption, not a differentiator. Without direction, moving fast only gets you to the wrong place faster.
2. Three key elements of product building in the AI era
- Speed
- Thanks to AI, the speed at which ideas can be turned into real prototypes has increased dramatically.
- Direction: explore broadly and deeply
- The trap of a single idea: If you keep refining only the first idea in response to AI’s helpful answers, it’s easy to get stuck in a 'Local Optima'.
- Solution (Broad & Deep): Use AI to generate multiple conflicting directions at once (Broad), then bring each one up to a level of fully working, highly refined prototypes (Deep) so you can compare and validate them.
- Craft: the difference made by details
- Rejecting AI defaults: AI-generated outputs may look plausible, but they are average and formulaic. If you passively accept them as 'good enough,' your brand identity disappears.
- Making deliberate choices: Only relentless refinement—cutting back, removing what’s unnecessary, and shaping with intent—creates differentiation in the flood of AI products.
3. Conclusion
In an era where anyone can make anything, the only real competitive edge lies in 'what you choose to make' and 'how carefully you refine it'.
