Lost dog—or lost designer?
1. The same AI design can be judged differently in different contexts
Even with the same technology, necessity and purpose can change our judgment.
- A missing-dog poster or promotional material for a small pizza shop can create opportunities for people unable to afford professional design.
- Replacing employees raises a different question.
- Can automation for survival and layoffs to increase profits be judged by the same standard?
2. Consider both necessity and the distribution of benefits
“Under what conditions does its use become unjust?” is a more concrete question than “Is AI design ethical?”
- Justification of the decision: Consider whether automation was necessary and whether reasonable alternatives and resources were available.
- Distribution of consequences: Examine who benefits from the savings and who bears the losses.
3. Justified use and ethical training are separate issues
A useful result does not resolve concerns about training data.
- Humans also learn from existing creative work, but this cannot be equated with AI training.
- Scale, methods, consent, compensation, and commercial use require separate consideration.
4. Conflicting interests require negotiation
There may be no answer that protects the interests of designers, businesses, customers, and workers alike.
- Respecting the value of labor differs from guaranteeing permanent demand for it.
- Businesses’ pursuit of efficiency does not justify every decision merely because it reduces costs.
