As AI speeds up screen production, deciding what to build and which concept to choose becomes more important.
- Producing layouts and wireframes quickly is no longer enough to explain a designer’s value.
- The ability to choose a concept that fits the product and its users, and explain why, matters increasingly.
- Is this feature really needed?
- Does this flow match how users actually behave?
2. Seeing the Problems Behind a Polished Screen
Identifying the gap between visual polish and actual usability is also part of a designer’s role.
- Consider where first-time users might get confused and how they can continue after an error.
- Account for users with limited vision, less capable devices, or poor network conditions.
- Be prepared to revise or discard plausible-looking AI output when it does not fit the user’s context.
3. Thinking Habits to Build Before Seniority
Even junior designers can practice asking “Why is this needed?” before “How should I make it?”
- Explain major design decisions in terms of user problems rather than personal taste.
- Make the explanation more specific: move from “It looks clean” to “It helps this user complete this task easily.”
- Observe moments when real users hesitate or behave differently than expected.
- Use those observations to assess AI output, developing tool proficiency and judgment together.
