Zero to One
1. The question this book addresses
What important truth is there that others do not see?
- Core perspective
- 1 to n is scaling; 0 to 1 is creating new value
- Focus on making your position so clear that you can avoid competition, rather than trying to win it
- Founding perspective
- Good companies are not happy in the same way as everyone else
- Monopoly is not a trick to fool the market, but the result of value that is hard to replace
2. What designers should take away
Define an experience that is radically different before worrying about making the screen pretty
- Product experience
- Create a reason users struggle to think of alternatives
- Design experiences that change the basis of choice, not just incremental improvements
- User scope
- Build something that someone truly needs, rather than something that is merely decent for everyone
- First, deeply understand a small, clearly defined user group
3. Questions to try right away
Questions that examine monopoly potential, not just differentiation
- 10x difference
- Write down the one area where your product feels overwhelmingly better to users
- Look at where the big gap comes from: features, price, time, or trust
- Small market
- Define the narrowest user group you can realistically win first
- Confirm why they must choose you
