Climbing the Fidelity Ladder
1. The limitations of wireframes
- In the past, high-fidelity mockups and prototypes were expensive and time-consuming to produce, so teams relied on lo-fi wireframes made of gray boxes and arrows.
- However, low-fidelity wireframes can cause miscommunication by leading different stakeholders—including PMs, developers, and executives—to imagine completely different products from the same drawing.
2. The collapse of high-fidelity production costs
- The combination of design systems, component libraries, and, most importantly, AI has made generating high-fidelity screens and working code much faster and less expensive.
- The author presents an example in which a single watercolor painting was rapidly expanded through collaboration with AI into a design system called “Inkwash,” containing 64 components, 288 icons, four themes, and working code.
3. The camera and painting metaphor
- When photography emerged, painting did not disappear. Instead, it evolved from realistic depiction toward conveying meaning and emotion through movements such as Impressionism and abstraction.
- As AI makes high-fidelity screens nearly free, the designer’s role also moves from simply drawing screens toward setting direction, planning, and directing context.
4. The core is “taste” and a sense of what feels true
- As polished mockups become inexpensive, high-fidelity screens can now be explored quickly and discarded like lightweight sketches.
- In an environment where anyone can produce high-fidelity mockups, the differentiators become the designer’s taste and intuition in judging which design is truly right.
