Markdown Metacode That Shapes Coding Agent Behavior

Software development knowledge—including architecture, ADRs, and security reviews—is beginning to move out of traditional wikis and ticket systems into Markdown-based files stored beside the codebase, where coding agents can easily read and use it. Together, these files form a Metacode Layer that communicates developer intent and judgment in a structured form agents can understand.

• Onboarding and Standing Rules
  • AGENTS.md: A neutral guide containing the project structure, build and test commands, coding conventions, PR rules, and more.
  • Other rule files: Framework- and vendor-specific files such as CLAUDE.md, .claude/rules/, GEMINI.md, and GitHub Copilot instruction files.
• Packaging Repeatable Procedures (Skills)
  • SKILL.md: A concrete workflow packaged with the guides, scripts, templates, and references required for a specific task, such as a database migration.
  • Documenting Change Intent (Specs, Plans, Tasks) Specifications and plans are structured for human review before agent implementation. The workflow proceeds from spec.md (requirements and purpose) → plan.md (technical design and approach) → tasks.md (executable units).
• Domain-Specific Context (Domain Files)
  • ARCHITECTURE.md (system boundaries, NFRs, and decisions), DESIGN.md (design system), AUTH.md (authentication logic), and REVIEW.md (code-review priorities) document specialized engineering knowledge.
• Durable Learning History (Memory)
  • MEMORY.md: Stores useful unstructured lessons learned during work, such as build prerequisites and debugging patterns. After local recording and review, these lessons can be promoted into shared project rules or architecture documents.

• Coding agents become Intent Compilers, transforming human-authored metacode—intent and requirements—into executable source code. Keeping these knowledge files current and appropriately scoped is emerging as a core engineering responsibility.
