Speak Data: A Graphic Language Designed for Data Humanism
1. Using data humanism as the starting point for a visual language
It sees data not as a set of objective numbers, but as a language shaped by human observation, emotion, and context.
- The repeated “Data is ____” in 17 interviews reveals multiple perspectives instead of a single definition
- By placing different answers such as memory, feedback, and story side by side, it shows that data can vary depending on the speaker.
- Small dots and lines, handwriting, and irregular traces turn numbers into personal records
- While not abandoning the precision of charts, it leaves visible the fact that data is made and interpreted by people.
2. Bringing the freedom of hand-drawing into conflict with the order of the grid
It creates both familiarity and trust by placing the imperfections of analog graphics inside a refined typesetting system.
- Pencil lines, markers, anatomical diagrams, and handwritten annotations distance the work from the smooth impression of algorithms
- Data visualization appears less like a finished result and more like a process in which observation and interpretation accumulate.
- Body text, plates, quotations, and footnotes are aligned within a stable grid
- Sufficient white space and baselines around the free diagrams make even complex information feel comfortable to read.
3. Designing the rhythm of reading through typography and color
Strong headings, calm body text, and handwriting create different voices and control the pace of the book.
- Condensed bold sans serif quickly imprints the character of chapters and interviewees
- The serif typeface for body text preserves readability across long interviews, and handwriting adds a layer of personal interpretation.
- Magenta, mustard, mint, and multicolor accents distinguish the mood and transitions of each section
- The experience of a book to read and a portfolio to appreciate visual material flows together naturally.
4. Turning repeatable graphic grammar into a brand asset
From the cover to interview spreads and data works, dots, lines, annotations, and radial structures are varied to build a single identity.
- The cover compresses the theme with overwhelming typography and data graphics radiating from the center
- Inside, the same elements expand with different density and direction to fit portraits, quotations, and statistics.
- Even without making every page identical, the rules of combination bind the whole together
- Moving beyond logo-centered branding, data visualization itself becomes a memorable brand language.
